L’amour qui, des hauts cieux, Jésus ! te fit descendre
À ce Gethsémané, … ce sanglant Golgotha,
Où tu fus transpercé des traits de Jéhova ?

Ce ne sont pas, Seigneur, tes célestes armées,
Ni tes œuvres, partout si richement semées,
Ni l’abîme des mers, ni la hauteur des cieux,
Qui pourront célébrer ton amour merveilleux.

Ô Jésus ! ton amour et ta grâce ineffables,
Qui les exaltera, si ce n’est ces coupables
Que toi-même as faits rois et sacrificateurs,
Et pour qui tu goûtas la mort et ses terreurs ?

Oui, tes rachetés seuls, dans leur sainte allégresse,
Chanteront tes bontés, béniront ta tendresse.
Tu les acquis, Jésus, par ton sang précieux.
Ils seront pour toujours avec toi dans les cieux.

bis nach Gethsemane, bis hin nach Golgatha,
wo Gottes Schwert erwacht, und wo kein Helfer da?

Herr, Deiner Engel Heer, das tut nach Deinen Worten,
und Deiner Schöpfung Werk, die Vielfalt allerorten,
das Meer, so tief und weit, der hohen Himmel Pracht —
nichts könnte je erhöhn der Liebe Wundermacht!

Dein Lieben, teurer Herr, die Fülle Deiner Gnaden,
erhebt nur jene Schar, die einstmals schuldbeladen,
und nun ein Königtum und Priester sind vor Gott,
für die Du einst geschmeckt des Todes bittre Not.

Nur der Erlösten Schar wird jubelnd Dank Dir bringen,
wird freudig Deine Huld und Gütigkeit besingen.
Dein Blut hat sie erkauft, Dein Tod hat sie befreit,
um bald bei Dir zu sein in ewger Herrlichkeit.

to this Gethsemane... this bitter Golgotha,
where Thou wast pierced by Jehovah’s wrath?

It is not, Lord! Thy heavenly hosts,
nor Thy works, so widely spread;
nor the abyss of the sea, nor the heights of heaven,
which will be able to celebrate Thy marvellous love.

O Jesus! Thy love and Thy unspeakable grace,
who shall exalt them, but these guilty ones
which Thou Thyself hast made
kings and priests,
and for whom Thou hast tasted death and its terrors?
4.
Yes, only Thy redeemed, with holy joy,
shall sing of Thy goodness, and bless Thy tenderness
Thou hast purchased them, Jesus, with Thy precious blood.
They shall be forever with Thee in heaven.
