Lorsqu’à la voix du Fort, de l’Éternel,
Surgissait la lumière !
Quand de son bras il étendait les cieux,
Quand, déployant son pouvoir glorieux,
Sa main formait la terre !

Lorsqu’ici-bas, Jésus, Emmanuel,
Naquit dans la faiblesse !
Les anges saints disaient : « Gloire au Seigneur !
Paix sur la terre ! » et le céleste chœur
Tressaillait d’allégresse.

Lorsqu’un pécheur répondant à l’appel
Du Sauveur qui l’invite,
Tous ses péchés sont ôtés pour jamais !
Jésus lui donne et la vie et la paix,
Et dans son sein l’abrite.

Oh ! quelle joie et quels transports au ciel,
Lorsque les saints, fils du jour éternel,
Viendront tous prendre place
Près de Jésus, à jamais bienheureux,
Et chanteront son amour généreux,
Son ineffable grâce !

als durch des starken Gottes Allmachtswort
die Welt einst ward gerufen,
als aus dem Nichts diese Erde entstand,
mächtig und hehr von den Himmeln umspannt,
die Seine Hände schufen!

als hier erschien Emmanuel, «das Wort»,
in Niedrigkeit geboren!
Engel verkündeten: «Ehre dem Herrn!
Friede auf Erden, sei’s nah oder fern!
Menschen hat Er erkoren!»

wenn ein Verlorner folgt dem Gnadenwort
des Heilands voll Erbarmen!
All seine Schuld Gott ihm völlig vergibt,
Jesus das Leben und Frieden ihm gibt,
schützt ihn mit starken Armen.

O welch Entzücken im himmlischen Ort
wenn bald die Braut verherrlicht einzieht dort
am Ziele ihrer Pfade!
Jesu ganz nah, wird glückselig sie sein,
ewiglich Dank Seiner Liebesmacht weihn,
Seiner so reichen Gnade!

of the Lord inviting him,
all his sins are taken away forever!
Jesus gives him life and peace,
and shelters him in His bosom.

when the saints, sons of the eternal day,
will all come to take their place
near Jesus, forever blessed,
to sing His bountiful love,
His unspeakable grace!
