Qui dira, Jésus, la souffrance
Que par amour tu supportas,
Dans ton chemin d’obéissance
Qui conduisait à Golgotha,
Et ton insondable tristesse
Quand tu suppliais, prosterné,
Ô cher Sauveur, dans la détresse
Du combat de Gethsémané !

Anticipant l’heure terrible,
Tu connus l’angoisse et l’effroi,
Demandant, s’il était possible,
Que ceci passât loin de toi.
« Mais que ta volonté soit faite ! »
Ô sublime acceptation
Du Rédempteur que rien n’arrête,
En qui tout est perfection !

Venu pour honorer le Père,
Jusqu’à la mort tu le servis ;
En toi seul, il put se complaire,
Son Bien-aimé, humble et soumis.
Nous t’offrons, Seigneur, notre hommage,
Contemplant un tel dévouement ;
Nous exalterons d’âge en âge
Ce suprême renoncement.

Herr Jesus, ach, wieviel Beschwerde,
Entsagung, Widerstand und Leid
hat Dir gebracht auf dieser Erde
der Weg der Unterwürfigkeit!
Und wer kann Deine Not ergründen,
wenn ringend, betend, voller Angst
wir Dich auf Deinen Knieen finden,
als in Gethsemane Du rangst!

Du sahst voraus die ganze Schwere,
des Kreuzes Schrecken, all sein Weh,
und batest, wenn es möglich wäre,
daß dieser Kelch vorübergeh’.
«Und doch — Dein Wille soll geschehen!» —
O welch erhabne Willigkeit
wir da bei Dir, dem Heiland, sehen:
In Dir ist nur Vollkommenheit!

Den Vater ehrtest Du im Leiden
und dientest Ihm bis hin zum Tod.
An Dir, Herr, konnte Er sich weiden,
weil Du so willig trugst die Not.
Nun preisen unsre Liederklänge
die Widmung, die kein Mensch erfaßt;
Dir schallen ewig Lobgesänge,
weil Du Dich hingegeben hast!

Jesus, who can tell the sufferings
which in love Thou didst endure,
in Thy path of obedience
which led to Golgotha;
and Thine unfathomable sorrow
when, bowing, Thou didst plead
O dear Saviour, in the distress
of the strife at Gethsemane!
2.
Anticipating that dread hour,
Thou wast in anguish and fear,
asking, if it was possible,
that the cup should pass from Thee
“But Thy will be done!”
O great acceptance
of the Redeemer, who turned not away,
in whom all is perfection!
3.
Thou didst come to honour the Father,
unto death didst serve Him;
In Thee alone, He found His delight,
His Beloved, humble and subject.
We render to Thee, Lord, our homage,
beholding such devotion:
We will exalt in all ages
this supreme renouncement.
